Join us as we celebrate the publication of Sam Stephenson’s new book, Gene Smith’s Sink, which began as essays for The Paris Review Daily. The evening’s program is inspired by the beguiling life and legacy of pioneering American photographer W. Eugene Smith. Regarded as the father of the photo-essay genre, Smith captured iconic and gritty images of the basements and alleyways of New York’s jazz scene, and his poignant documentation of the disease-stricken residents of post-war Japan continues to haunt our collective consciousness. The expansive event will feature readings by Stephenson, a short film by Jem Cohen, and performances of the music of Hall Overton, Thelonious Monk, and Sonny Clark by musicians Angelica Sanchez, Victor Pablo, Wadada Leo Smith, and a string quartet from Wordless Music Orchestra, including Pauline Kim Harris, Conrad Harris, Isabel Hagen, and Clarice Jensen.
This is a ticketed event. You can purchase general admission or, as a special offer, a general-admission ticket and a year’s subscription to The Paris Review. More details at National Sawdust.
